  Iran was elected for a four year period as a member of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Board of Directors, on Friday 11 December 2009.

The biennial General Conference of the UNIDO, the highest decision making body of the UN organization, began its five-day activities on Monday, 9 December 2009, with the participation of some 1.000 participants from over 140 countries, including over 40 presidents, prime ministers and industry minister, as well as specialized industrial organs and NGOs,

The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the UN and other International Organizations in Vienna, Ali Asghar Soltaneih presided this five-day meeting. On the last working day, Friday 11 December 2009,  the Conference passed resolutions on Member States’ industrial programs and projects as well as a resolution on the composition of the UNIDO Board by which Iran was also elected unanimously as a UNIDO Board's member for a four year period.

This year the UNIDO General Conference  emphasized the need for encouraging green industries, usage of renewable energies, and construction of construction of infrastructures aimed at boosting campaign against poverty around the globe.
 
The UNIDO General Assembly concluded its week-long activities with the closing ceremony of an exhibition in which industrial products of various member countries, including the Islamic Republic of Iran, were put on display.
