Statement by

H. E. Ali Asghar SOLTANIEH

Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran

At the

32nd Session of The Industrial Development Board

Vienna, 29 November 2006

Honorables,

Director General

Distinguished delegations

Ladies and Gentilmen,

First of all I would like to express my sincere and warm welcome to high ranking officials for participating in our session.

As you are aware we are celebrating UNIDO's 40th anniversary and it is a great pleasure for me to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of you and especially to those who devoted their life for the progress and flourishing of the Organization.

I would like to convey my sincere thanks to UNIDO and especially Dr. Yumkella that at the age of information and telecommunication, is taking bigger steps, in inspiring manner, for the improvement of the Organization to cope with the speedy development of science and technology and to efficiently respond to all new challenges we are confronting for industrial development.

Reviewing UNIDO's 4- decade history can show us ups and downs that the Organization has faced.

As it was reflected at 40th anniversary celebration by invited guest speakers, UNIDO is playing a major role on poverty reduction through productive activities, trade capacity building, environment and energy.

UNIDO is entrusted and expected to facilitate the realization of MDGs.

Big gap between haves and not haves, between industrial countries and least developed countries should not sustain any more.

Full and efficient implementation, in spirit and letter, of UNIDO's constitution as well as other millstone policy-making documents like Long Term Vision Statement and the Business Plan on Future Role and Functions of the Organization is absolutely necessary.

There is no doubt that all Member States are determined that UNIDO should continue to play its crucial role.

It is expected that Member States further strengthen UNIDO to accomplish its statutory objectives.

The expectation of international community, as now being informed of 40th anniversary, is highly augmented. This means the loads and responsibilities on our shoulders as Member States and particularly of the members of IDB is much more than before.

I have full confidence that with the spirit of cooperation which I benefited from last session of IDB we would be able to fulfill the expectations in the most effective manner.

Thank you
